An installation piece based on the Everyday Sexism Project twitter account set up by Laura Bates. The piece consists of quotes from the twitter account stenciled with graphite on brown paper, hung together with thread and tape. I used tweets which I found particularly shocking yet relatable to most women and girls.
The quotes read:
‘This morning a guy asked for my number and then asked whether or not I was a virgin’
‘My workplace takes photos of everyone for the staff page on the website. Women are photoshopped, men are not’
‘Myself and female business partner were turned down for a contract last week as we were ‘too much of a pregnancy risk’
‘Slipped and grazed my upper leg behind bar. Duty manager took me in to tend to it so he could ‘get your pants down’
‘Work the longest hours out of everyone in my office and get paid the lowest wage’
“Men categorize women in one of four ways: Mothers, virgins, sluts and bitches. Of course none of the above is suitable for the modern business woman. But you can create your own image by selecting pieces of each archetype that work for you…This leaves men confused and unable to pigeionhole you. What they are forced to do instead is take you seriously.”
